Treasures

The word treasure can be used as a noun or a verb. As a noun, treasure can refer to a valuable item such as gold or precious stones. Treasure can also mean hidden wealth, like a buried treasure or an ancient tomb. Or perhaps a cherished possession or person comes to mind. In use as a verb, treasure means to hold something or someone deeply or take great care of something that is precious to you.

When I consider a treasure, my mind goes immediately to the treasure hunt. I am quite fond of neighborhood garage sales or visits to a thrift store. Reusing and repurposing items is great for our environment, sure, but the discovery of an epic piece of art, a vintage sign, or a remarkable set of cut glass tumblers is truly satisfying.

Things I treasure in my life are my family and friends, my health, traveling, and volunteering. The Saint John's community enriches many parts of my life. I participate on the Mental Health team as well as the Board of Trustees. Visit the church on Thursdays morning and you will find me serving as a weekly office volunteer. Author Nancy B. Urbach writes, "Finding yourself after many years, is a treasure like no other." The members and staff of our church have inspired me to find myself on my journey of faith. Saint John's is a treasure.

Speaking of treasures, we have an amazing opportunity this month to experience the treasures of our very talented church family. On Sunday, September 27, at noon, Saint John's will celebrate the church's birthday with our Luau Luncheon and Hands & Hearts Silent Auction. The event is co-sponsored by the Mental Health and Hospitality teams. Auction items will include one-of-a-kind arts and crafts, themed gift baskets from Saint John's members, and services such as personal baking, organizing, and Enneagram coaching. The luncheon is by "love donation" and will feature pulled pork sandwiches with a variety of sides and desserts. All proceeds will go to support Austin Clubhouse, a non-profit providing opportunity and community for adults living with mental health diagnoses.
