Renewable Energy

Renewable Energy

by Green Team on April 20, 2023

We hear so much information on energy sources, what's happening with coal production, and many of us regularly get calls about installing solar panels. Where does the U.S. Stand on renewable energy produced? According to the Austin-American Statesman (March 30, 2023) renewable energy was ahead of coal production last year. Wind and solar energy are growing rapidly and are now the most affordable source of new electricity in most areas of the country.

In the past 10 years wind energy cost has declined by 70% and solar by 90%.

Energy Source Breakdown:
Coal – 17%
Natural Gas-39%
Wind & Solar- 14%
Hydropower- 6%
Geothermal & Biomass- >1%

Texas is #2 behind California in electricity production from solar energy but is way ahead of all other states in wind production, producing 26% of all wind powered electricity in the country. There are seven times more small scale solar energy panels on homes in California There is a lot of wind in West Texas and a lot of open space for the turbines! What can we do concerning energy use in our homes? Support wind energy through Austin Energy and consider installing solar panels if you own a home.
