While our annual Blessing of Backpacks is scheduled for this coming Sunday, it really started a couple of days ago. At Youth Group on Sunday night, we blessed 100 backpacks that will go to students in need. Thanks to your donations, Saint John’s, and thanks to the work of our Risk-Taking Missions and Service team, these backpacks were filled with school supplies.

When we prayed over the backpacks, we talked about how we didn’t know what the kids who receive these supplies are going through. They could be excited about the new school year or afraid. Their home could be comfortable and safe, or it may not be clear where they will stay the night next week. They could have full bellies each day, or they might not know where their next meal will come from. Whatever their situation may be, we know that God is already with them – the blessing has already begun – and we prayed they would know it too. We prayed that God would continue to bring people into their lives who would support, encourage, teach, and know them as beloved children of God.

This is our prayer for all students returning to school – that through all they may experience and struggle with this year, they know God is with them, and they have the support they need.

We will kick off this year and lean into the blessing together this Sunday during worship. As we open this new chapter, everyone is invited to bring a new children’s book for kids who come to Hope Food Pantry.

Whatever this season brings you, our prayer is that you know the blessing has already begun – God is with you.
