Reflections on Memorial Day

Greater love has no one than this:
to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.

~John 15:13

Reflections on Memorial Day

The truth is, I didn’t join the Army out of a sense of patriotism, not at first anyway. For me, enlisting was about self-preservation. I grew up in a difficult environment, with very little stability or financial support. The Army gave me a way out and a chance to build something better for myself.

Over time, it became more than just a way forward, it became a family. I found purpose, discipline, and lifelong bonds. But those bonds also came with loss. I’ve lost friends, two in combat and one to suicide. Their absence never really leaves me.

That’s what Memorial Day means to me. It’s not about those who served, it’s about those who never came home. It’s about honoring the men and women who gave everything and making sure their names and sacrifices aren’t forgotten.

And yes, it’s okay to have a barbecue or spend the day with your family. In fact, I’m certain that’s exactly what my friends would want to see: people laughing, enjoying life, and being free. Just take a moment in the middle of that time. Say a prayer. Speak a name. Remember.

Jesus said in John 15:13, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” That kind of love, that kind of sacrifice, deserves to be remembered.

So, this Memorial Day, whether you're around a grill or gathered at church, I hope you’ll pause and reflect on those who gave their last measure for the dream of America and stand for what the United States should be, and I believe can be, a shining beacon of hope for humankind.
