I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection … ~ Philippians 3:10a
by Rev. Hilary Marchbanks on March 28, 2023
Each morning, I walk my son to his middle-school bus stop in our neighborhood. I enjoy the conversation; he enjoys the help carrying his trombone. The Monday after Spring Break was a rough one. The time change had happened over the break, so the morning felt extra early and the morning light was dim. We set out on the sidewalk.
“It’s dark,” he told me.
“Yeah,” I said, “It’s the time change. But the days are getting longer, and the evenings will have more light.”
“I know,” he said, “it’s just a noticeable change.”
Sunday begins Holy Week, a week filled with worship services that bring us closer to Christ through the story of Jesus’ death and resurrection. I enthusiastically invite you to take part in these services – not just Easter Sunday -- to better understand the many aspects of what we celebrate Easter morning.
Walter Brueggemann reminds us that Holy Week helps us fully understand who God is, “This God has the capacity to restore, recover, and revivify! This is the God of Easter who has not quit, not even on that dread Friday.”
The week's gatherings put us in conversation with Jesus, where he walked, who he encouraged, what he endured, and what God promises. God does have the capacity to restore, recover, and rectify. If you join us for the shift of Palm Sunday, the drama of Maundy Thursday, and the depth of Good Friday, the celebration of Easter is an even more noticeable change. Come and notice, and in it you may be changed as well.
Grace and peace,
