JOY Senior Adult Daytrip: The Painted Churches of Schulenburg and Hallettsville

JOY Senior Adult Daytrip: The Painted Churches of Schulenburg and Hallettsville

Thursday, April 20, 2023, 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM

Cost: $70.00

Join us for a day of art and awe as we take a guided tour through four of the famed painted
churches. These churches were lovingly painted by 19th century Czech and German immigrants,
hoping to preserve their cultural identity. The churches are intricately decorated in the lavish
style of their homelands.

1. St. Mary's Catholic Church in High Hill is known as "the queen of the Painted Churches" and is
in the National Register of Historic Places. It also has a great gift shop.
2. St. Mary's Catholic Church in Praha is the oldest of the four in Fayette County, built in 1895 in
the Gothic style. 3. St. Cyril and Methodius Church in Dubina was built in an ancient oak grove
in 1911 with beautifully painted stenciling on the walls & ceilings. The hand carved altars were
imported from Europe.
4. St. John the Baptist Church in Ammannsville is also on the National Register of Historic
Places. Statues of the Cross were also imported.
