United Women in Faith (formerly United Methodist Women) invites the congregation to a presentation about the Empowering Women Out of Prison program at Lockhart State Prison. Saint John’s UWF has supported the faith-based EWOP program for several years and encourages even more involvement in prison ministry.
Join us for coffee and snacks and a presentation by the Executive Director of this program. There will be a basket at the door for anyone who would like to make a cash or check contribution to support EWOP. Checks should be payable to UWF. We also will be collecting large boxes and small individual packages of facial tissue for the nurse at McCallum High School.
EWOP Executive Director Pam Parker Thomure will speak about this innovative program and its success, as well as ways volunteers can help. The program’s goal is to reduce recidivism by helping women prisoners create a “fresh start” for themselves and their families when they leave prison. Participants gain the confidence, support, and tools for self-sufficiency they will need to succeed outside a prison setting. The EWOP curriculum prepares women for a job search or self-employment.
Texas now incarcerates more women than any other state. By teaching a year-long head and heart program where convicts become leaders and entrepreneurs, EWOP is changing the social justice landscape for rehabilitation and reform.
What if you were judged every day for the rest of your life for the worst mistake you ever made? What if you had no family or peer support to help you get back on the right track? What if you had an opportunity to take that worst mistake and turn it into the best opportunity you ever had to truly discover God’s plan for your life?
The faith-based Empowering Women Out of Prison program is that God-sent learning opportunity presented yearly to 100 women at Lockhart State Prison. This Saint John’s UWF Unit Gathering on February 11 will feature a presentation about this wonderful program. Please invite friends, relatives, youth, and anyone interested. Saint John’s.
Saint John’s UWF has supported the EWOP program by making financial contributions; donating course textbooks, self-help books, and CDs; sending holiday greeting cards; and donating clothing and new underwear for the EWOP clothes closet available to women upon prison release.
