Interfaith Hospitality Network
“Foundation for the Homeless envisions Central Texas as a community where every person can have a home–a safe space where they can sleep, play, learn, work and grow in the presence of loved ones.
Foundation for the Homeless mobilizes faith-based and community resources to restore hope and aspiration through transformative opportunities that prevent or end homelessness and nurture a more caring, sustainable community.”
InterFaith Hospitality Network provides transitional shelter for families experiencing homelessness. IHN operates a 90 day program helping families get back on their feet. As part of that program, families spend a week at a time at area churches and centers. To be a hosting congregation facilities must be available for temporary bedrooms, showers, and laundry.
Saint John's has been a hosting congregation for almost 12 years. During our hosting times, guests stay in bedrooms converted from Sunday School classrooms. Their needs for the week are furnished by Saint John's members.
Countless volunteer opportunities are available such as providing grocery items, serving as evening host, overnight host, or as dinner hosts providing healthy meals. Opportunities also exist to help set up and tear down rooms, transport the trailer, and unloading and reloading. Volunteer sign up sheets are posted in the lobby 3 weeks prior to hostings to give everyone ample time to sign up and partcipate. This is a family mission using 75-85 volunteers.
