"The Lord God took the human and put it in the Garden of Eden
to work it and take care of it."

Genesis 2:15

Our story starts in 1995, when the St. John's congregation asked itself two key questions: Can our church continue to thrive when landlocked on a 1.2 acre triangle in a facility that looks (and smells!) old? Should we sell our church and move to the suburbs where there's more room to grow?

The questions were answered via congregational survey and the answers were almost unanimous: STAY PUT...but do spiff up the sanctuary.

The dreams started small, such as replacing the pews whose springs had sprung (ouch!) and painting the faded trim. But those dreams became contagious, resulting in an epidemic of dreaming among trustees, staff, church leaders, and eventually a Building Committee. The dreams were far-sighted, planning a building to serve people we didn’t even know but whose stories we wanted to share. The dreamers asked:

  • If we renovate the nursery and add a “crying room” at the back of the sanctuary, will families with cute little babies come?
  • If we put a roof over the open-air courtyard and add Sunday School rooms, will more people of all ages participate in Christian education classes and programs?
  • If we build a big hall with an adjacent kitchen, could the church family eat together after worship and just have fun?
  • If we install an elevator and even a lift to the choir loft, could people in wheelchairs, on walkers and canes become more active in the life of the church?
  • If we add showers in the restrooms, could homeless families with children sleep at the church for short-term housing?
  • And wouldn’t it be cool to put a screen in the sanctuary for projecting images and songs?
  • The dreaming made God smile, because all the dreams were about expanding the reach of the kingdom.
